Seeing the potential to offer learning opportunities far beyond baseline educational objectives, we strove to design archival materials that would enable students to meet and surpass standards while inspiring their hearts and nurturing their minds. Combining our experience in the fields of education, business, and design, Blackbird & Company products were conceived to link the child’s passion for discovery to their longitudinal work of becoming educated. We believe that story is the heart and soul of education, so story is where we anchored our curriculum line. How many times have we encountered adults who despise reading? When J.K. Rowling’s last Harry Potter book was released, readers across the globe whispered that this would be the last book they read. This came as no surprise because, frankly, people hate to read. This is a modern tragedy. Our desire is to put books into the hands of readers and to motivate them to respond to what is read. Great stories – whether written in prose, crafted in verse, sculpted in stone, or painted in oil – from the classic to the modern, are waiting open arms, to inspire imagination. Learning to read should not be isolated from learning to write. Great writing is work connected to the soul. Great writing brings shape to imagination. Great writing evokes, engages, and inspires human curiosity. Integrated reading and writing will develop the young writer’s voice, strengthen their ability to communicate new ideas, and teach them to become keen observers of their world. Our goal is to help students care about work of crafting words and those are words on the page that are worth reading. Our Discovery Method™ was developed to cultivate a tradition of integrated reading and writing. We believe that this integration is essential to a full academic experience.
