Level 2 guides are recommended for elementary (grades 3 and 4) students who are in the process of acquiring the proficiency necessary to confidently read and to respond to a complex piece of literature. Each guide is designed to be completed in five weeks, which allows students to work through six to eight units in a typical school year.
Ease into Level 2 with stories that are entirely engaging but allow readers to engage in the writing jump that this level demands—students must use dictionary skills, craft more complex sentences, and compose an expanded paragraph without format prompting. The Family Under the Bridge, Macaroni Boy, Half Magic, and Ben and Me are great first choices. From there all titles will sturdily bridge the gap from Level 2 to 3, but we recommend that you save the best (and most difficult) for last, The Magician's Nephew.
Earlybirds are suitable for entry level elementary.
Level 1 is suitable for lower elementary.
Level 2 is suitable for middle elementary.
Level 3 is suitable for upper elementary and entry level middle school.
