Although every book offered in the Blackbird & Company literature guide collection has been carefully chosen for it’s literary and educational value, another very important consideration for us is simple kid-appeal! Especially for your reluctant readers, a truly engaging story can be just the thing to help them take a step in overcoming their struggles with reading. The books below are student recommendations and stories that they love!
Isaiah, Miles & Michael love: Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown
“It’s fun to read about someone who is flat, and many unexpected things happen!”
Liam loves: Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl
“Danny is my favorite story because it is action packed and very funny!”
Robert loves: I Am David by Anne Holm
“I like how, even though David is a kid, he can find his way.”
Noelle loves: The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
“I loved the story-line and I loved the ending!”
Mindy loves: Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott
“I can identify with Rose because she is a tomboy and a girly-girl at the same time.”
Hunter, Cloe & Taylor love: The Westing Game by Jeff Brown
“Our favorite of all the books we've read in the past five years because it is mysterious and suspenseful.”
Let’s Talk About It!
Kids love to talk, so why not get them together to talk about great stories? Discussing a book is paramount to understanding, synthesis, and ultimately application of a story's depth. It also teaches students to be respectful listeners of other people’s opinions, while honing the skill of expressing their own thoughts and observations. Providing an environment where discussion is promoted, one where student thoughts are applauded, will develop an unshakable love for reading like no other exercise we, as educators, provide.
Look for more information next month on how to get a book circle started.
“The things I want to know are in books. My best friend is the man who’ll get me a book I haven’t read.”
