Rekindle Zest

Reading and writing—this is the core of all language arts programs. When learning to read and write, students are introduced to a multitude of skills, then process and practice those skills for many years before achieving mastery. Wouldn’t it be truly great to have, “no child left behind” so that each and every child graduates from high school a passionate reader and writer?

When the language arts curriculum becomes tedious and redundant, this goal is thwarted. How many times have we heard stories of adults who despise reading? Recently, J.K. Rowling published the last book in her Harry Potter series. There was more than one confession by individuals across the globe that this would be the last book they read. This is a modern tragedy.

Why are young people uninspired? Why should we encourage our students to explore great stories and to develop their voice? And how do we begin to accomplish this daunting task? To begin with, perhaps we need to consider the fact that language is an experience and not simply an objective that students must meet to make the grade. Language connects humanity. Great stories have the potential to inspire the hearts and minds of readers.

Blackbird literature guides have been developed to spark student discovery of the components that make stories significant. Students pace through the reading and analysis of a selection in four weeks, with a fifth week of culminating activities. As students begin to think deeply about larger themes presented in a piece of literature, intelligence and imagination are rekindled. When literature is at the core of the language arts program, zest for reading and writing is set ablaze.
